BHS 100th Celebration

1959 News Headlines

CLASS OF ‘58 - 60TH Class Reunion

The BHS Class of ‘58 will be celebrating its 60th class reunion this summer over the weekend of August 3 thru 5, 2018.

As many of you know, this is also the 100
th anniversary of Boardman High school, being celebrated for the school year 2017-2018. Through our planning stage, we have been communicating with other classes that would like to join us, to assure we will have large enough numbers to reserve places at a cost that won’t be prohibitive. Most venues that we’ve looked at require 60 to 100 to be reserved. The interest from just our class has fallen short of this. Consequently, Jim Jones has been working with Jack Haplea (Class of ’59) and myself to line up the weekend’s events. Here is our schedule for which we are asking classmates to send in their reservation and money.

Friday, August 3rd - Golf organized by the Class of ’59 at a course they will designate.

Friday evening - The Class of ‘58 will be meeting at the “Magic Tree Pub & Eatery”, which is the same place as the “Sport’s Grill” where we met for our 50th reunion. It is virtually across the street from the Holiday Inn. We hope all classes will join us! You will be on your own for food and drinks.

Saturday, August 4th - Breakfast will be on your own. There will be no planned agenda for the day, unless arrangements can be made to tour the old and new high schools. Many classmates have expressed the desire to visit the sights in and around Youngstown. These include: Lanterman’s Mill and Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park, Butler Art Institute of American Art, Hollywood Gaming (Casino) and Race Course, De Yor Performing Arts Center and nearby Amish country. In addition, Don Samuels (Class of ‘59), who is a member of the Lake Club, has arranged for all classes to visit this beautiful venue for lunch at their own expense.

Saturday evening - All classes will meet at the Holiday Inn for a wonderful buffet dinner. The menu is one that will provide enough options to satisfy everyone. A bar will be set up with drinks on your own. Music will be provided.

Sunday, August 5th - We will have two options for a farewell breakfast for those that want to gather one last time. The Holiday Inn will be providing a breakfast buffet that you will pay for that morning. For those wishing a “lighter” breakfast, we have arranged for the back area of nearby O’Charley’s, where the Class of ‘58 met for their 50th. You will be on your own.

The cost per person will be $33.50, which covers the meal, music, bar setup and decorations. You will be on your own for bar drinks. We will be reserving a block of rooms for “out-of-towners” at the Holiday Inn Boardman, 7410 South Avenue. The group discounted room rate is $109 + tax vs. normally a $139 + tax rate. Please make your own reservations @ 844-205-9203 as soon as possible, because the hotel fills up on weekends during summer months.

Tear off and return with your check.

We all thanked Bill for his generosity and willingness to get us together.

The 1st 2017 BHS Golf Outing was held Friday, June 16th. This was a makeup outing as the original date of May 25th was rained out.
The day started with a group breakfast @ Bob Evens Restaurant in Canfield, just minutes away from Kennsington Golf Club where the golfing event was held.
We had 13 golfers; Team #1 Ed Lughibl, Mark Rappaport and Dave Brenner. Team #2 "The Murray Clan Lloyd, Dean, Al & J.R. Murray. Team #3 Ron Chick & Ted Gavossi. Team # 4 Pet Chick, Debbie Chick, George Zokle and My.
Closet to the pin competition was won by Debbie Chick on hole # 8 and Ron Chick won on hole # 13. We're still examining video of Hole #13 to make sure Ron did not take "A Mulligan"because it was his Birthday.
And the 19th hole was on the large Kennsington porch, over looking the golf course. After a few brews, apparently too many brews, the team score cards disappeared. Therefore team scores cannot be publicized for this outing.

We had the largest turnout yet for a BHS Golf Outing. 28 PLAYERS!!!!! A new record.
I believe I have the correct facts as I was given them after "A Few" beers by someone, who shall remain anonymous, who also was partaking of several "Suds" himself!!!!!
We played something new, "Shamble", described on two type written pages by our Host, Dick Selby.
There were several of Dick's fellow BHS administrators and teachers who played. And, after a while, when everyone was "Loose"at The 19th Hole, I realized that this shamble thing may have been created w hen Dick and his peers told us they were "Working" so hard at BHS!!
AND, they tried to make our BHS Class of 1959 feel GUILTY of BEING PARTY ANIMALS!!! However, I promised to burn the tape of yesterday's 19th Hole candid conversations.
The winner of the day's Shamble Game was a repeat performance of 2016 by the stacked team of Murray, Murray, Murray & Murray who uses the young, J.R.Murray to carry their sorry butts.
The two "Closest to The Pin" winners were Doug McKay and J.R.Murray.
Our Host went all out, giving 4 gift certificates for Firestone G.C. to the winning team and prizes to closest to the pin winners. Each team was given 4 golf balls w/ Firestone G.C. logo & ball marker.
However, we had to buy our own beer and drinks and no Cart Girl was on the course!!!!

The following is the official 2016 schedule of BHS 59 golfing events, including the annual summer gathering.

Regarding the golf events, four foursomes have been reserved for each of six (6) outings with the first tee time noted below.  Most events will be preceded  by a breakfast and followed by a "19th hole."  Additional details for each event will be provided by the respective hosts approximately three weeks in advance of their occurrence.

The Annual Gathering will be held on Friday, July 15th, beginning approximately 3:00 p.m.,

Breakfast at Chippewa Golf Course @ 8:45 a.m.; 19th Hole @ Chippewa Golf Course

Host:  Lloyd Murrary

19th Hole
On a nearly perfect beautiful sunny day (Thursday, July 14th), the team of Haplea, Ziemianski, Lugibihl and Mondora defeated, by one stroke, the group of Selby, Green and Murray at the classic Mill Creek (South) Donald Ross course. Cliff Green won the longest drive (about 600 miles) from Alton, Illinois. Mr. Lugibihl and Mr. Selby won the closest to the pin awards as did Dave Beede and Don Samuels (although the latter two might be considered suspicious) as they were only present for Breakfast and the 19th hole.

Friday, July 15th @ 9:28 a.m. -- Reserve Run -- Poland, OH
Breakfast at Bob Evans -- Boardman @ 8:00 a.m.; No 19th Hole
Host:  Bill DeCicco

Brother Z

On a second consecutive nearly perfect day (Friday, July 15th), the team of DeCicco, Murray and Ziemianski, defeated (again by a single stroke) the foursome composed of Green, Lugibihl, Mondora and Selby. A spectacular shot, which landed 22 inches from the cup, by Brother Z on hole #8 at Reserve Run, made the difference.

Friday, July 15th @ approximately 3:00 p.m. until ??? -- Annual Summer Gathering (Another Round at Reserve Run), 625 East Western Reserve Road, Poland, OH)
Host:  Bill DeCicco
Immediately following was the Annual Gathering at Another Round at Reserve Run where we were again joined by Don Samuels and Dave Beede with Carol Bender Gordon finally giving our rather small but spirited group (some with faulty memories) respectability and class. One of the first orders of business (in this year of presidential elections) was to provide President Don with a reaffirmation of his presidency now in its 60th year. In accepting the accolade President Don orated "the Boardman class of 1959 has always been great and I'm going to make it even greater." The occasion was celebrated with at least 4 pitchers of Yuengling.

Above daily reports submitted by Bill DeCicco on 7/16/16

Wednesday, September 14th @ 10:00 a.m.  -- Boulder Creek  -- Streetsboro, OH
Breakfast at Bob Evans Canfield @ 7:30 a.m. for "Boardman" group;  19th Hole @ Boulder Creek

         Host: Jack Haplea

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" but fortunately the best times FAR outweighed the worst ones -- which was the spotty weather.
Other than the 45 minutes or so of heavy rain which drove us indoors for needed nourishment, the merry band of 59ers pictured below had a good time golfing and conversing. In the end, the team of Selby, Bartlett, Haplea and DeCicco(who had to leave after nine holes because he felt he couldn't match the shot he had on # 7 which he posted on Facebook) took honors with a 2 over par score. The team of Pete and Debbie Chick, Ted Gavozzi and Mike Yeager finished 4 over par and the team of Ferrelli, Murray and Mondora finished 5 over par. There was a fourth team but scores were not turned in to the scorekeeper thus their results are not official. We play by the rules and stand for the National Anthem.
Yours very truly,

Hap Open
Good time by BHS59 classmates at the Boulder Creek golf outing .

10:30 a.m.        Thursday, October 15th     Boulder Creek                                            Streetsboro                        Myron Mondora

On a nearly perfect golf day in Streetsboro, OH the threesome led by Captain Mark Rappoport '63 and teammates Jack Haplea '59 and Bill DeCicco '59 shot the temperature (67 degrees) and eked out a 2 stroke victory over the foursome of Dick Selby '49, Myron Mondora '59, Lloyd Murray '59 and Dave Brenner '63.

Brother Hap, dressed from head to toe in maroon and white, had the golf highlight the day, placing his tee shot on the course's signature hole (#17) within 3 feet of the cup. And yes, he sank the putt for a birdie 2.

At the 19th hole, which followed, discussion took place regarding tentative plans for 2016 events. At this point there is consensus to continue a two day event in mid-July, which will include the annual gathering, and to likely reduce the number of golf outings by perhaps 2 or 3 with all or most to occur in the greater Boardman area.

If anyone has an opinion about this or desires to offer suggestions please feel free to post on BHSClassmates.
Additional details, regarding next year's events will be provided sometime during the early spring of next year.

Report submitted by Bill DeCicco.

Alan Murray (BHS 59) has an affiliation with "My Loop Card" which offers discounts for the three golf courses we will play in the Boardman area (Reserve Run, Salem Hills and the Links at Firestone Farms).  For additional information contact Alan at and also check out the website:  The Loop Card, if purchased can be used at some 20 "local" golf courses during the entire 2015 season.

List of Events

The following photos from Jack Haplea, Tom Ziemianski, Alan Spencer, Tom Lance, Jim Jones, Ron Chick and Dave Beede.

Jack Haplea our coordinator for the Huron/Sandusky Reunion has planned the activities as follows:

Arrive Wednesday 27th

Classmates can check into Sawmill at 4:00 PM or sooner if room is ready. Anyone arriving earlier can tour the area. There will be packets available at check in. Hap’s cell is 419 366 1696, call upon arrival and he'll meet you in the lobby.

Wednesday, 27th At 6:00 PM

The Explorer will be used (we did not have the 90-person minimum needed for a tour on Lake Erie close to the shore by Cedar Point or, if the weather is inclement, down the Huron River. It will be at least a one-hour trip and "munchies" plus beer, wine and soft drinks will be provided at a nominal cost. The Explorer is covered in the case of rain. Note: THOSE WHO SENT $100 FOR THE GOODTIME TRIP WILL HAVE IT REFUNDED, IF REQUESTED.

Wednesday, 27th at 7:30 PM

We should arrive back in port and classmates can eat dinner on their own at one of the two restaurants on site.

Wednesday, 27th at 9:00 PM

Sawmill employees will take us by golf carts to the shore on a pristine beach for a bonfire (reminiscent of Geneva on the Lake?). Cost will be around $200 total and we can divide the cost up at that time.

Thursday, August 28th at 9:00 AM

Classmates will have breakfast on site on their own and then meet in the lobby at 9:00 AM to be transported by Sawmill's vans or by classmates' vehicles to the Jet Express pier in Sandusky for a boat ride to Kelley’s Island or Put in Bay -- which we will discuss the evening before. Round trip rates are inexpensive and we should be eligible to get senior and/or group rates. Hopefully no one will be renting the Benson Ford boat so we can tour it.

Thursday, August 28th at 12:00 PM

Classmates will have lunch on their own and tour the various shops and other sites on the island; perhaps others can be reached at the Beer Barrel Saloon, the world's longest bar.

Thursday, August 28th at 6:00 PM

We will then meet back at the Jet Express pier for the trip back to Sandusky.

Once back in Sandusky, we can dine at any of the fine restaurants. This too we can discuss while on the boat trip so reservations can be made.

Thursday, August 28th at 9:30 PM

Those using the Sawmill shuttle should probably be ready to return and those driving on their own can return whenever.

Friday, August 29th at 9:00 AM

Classmates will eat breakfast on their own and the golfers will convene on the first tee promptly at 9:00 AM. I believe we will have 3 foursomes. Those not golfing will have had enough time to visit the area (museums, shopping etc.) for the next 5 to 6 hours.

Friday, August 28th at 3:00 PM

We should be ready to head on out to Boardman, which will take about 2 hours, for part two of our reunion.

Sawmill may still have vacancies so please book by calling them at (800) 729- 6455 and mention the Boardman High School Reunion.

We were able to get the senior rate of $30.

First Place -- Team of Don Bartlett (Captain), Jack Haplea and Lloyd Murray -- 66 (6 under par)
Commentary -- To win future BHS golf events, it is strongly advised that you arrange to have Black Bart as captain of your team. Lloyd also made a major contribution for the win but Brother Hap (wearing Irish green by the way) seemed distracted constantly mumbling "I can't believe the Browns beat the Stillers" and strategized (not on golf) but how to increase the value of his Brown's season tickets.

Second Place --Team of Ed Lughibhl (Honorary Captain), Ron Chick (65), Cliff Green and Bill Panick, (Chaney) -- 71 (1 under par)
Commentary -- scored the only eagle of the day, a 3 on hole #6 a long par five, Ron C. received the award for the worst attired and challenged the courses "on cart path only" rule. Cliff Green hit the flagstick on a par three and with a little luck would of had a hole in one and then required to purchase a round for all of his fellow classmates. Bill Panick (a friend of Ron's) is actually a Chaney grad as all are welcome to future BHS golf outings.

Third Place -- Team of Dick Selby (49), Honorary Captain), Pete Chick (61) and Bill DeCicco -- 77 (5 over par)
Commentary -- Pete dropped probably a 40 foot putt on #10 while Supt. Selby sank perhaps a 75 yard chip shot on #3 for a birdie. Here is the rest of that story. I know it is unusual but yours truly actually made a good chip shot to an elevated green where the flag (but not the hole) was visible. Pete also landed on the green as we thought also did Dick. However, when we approach the green, we thought Dick's shot might have rolled off the far edge into a slight ravine. After a 2 or 3 minutes search for his ball we gave up only to find Dick's Pinnacle 3 in the cup.

55 and Stayin’Alive!

Guess what came in the mail today!

A class reunion’s comin’ our way.

Start at Kalahari, Kelleys Island, Put-in-Bay.

Then head south to Boardman with more fun on the way.

Choose from golf or the Canfield Fair.

(Sure have fond memories of times spent there!)

Dinner at Tippy; Sunday brunch.

Thank you, Committee ----what a creative bunch!

One never knows what life will bring.

Our 50th reunion brought such zing

That we planned a 70th birthday bash.

Now that was a party fun to crash!

Years had passed, we didn’t expect

It would be so easy to re-connect.

Our high school values haven’t changed much;

Our email group keeps in touch.

Reflection tells us it’s been a great ride.

We’ll go forward, side-by-side.

Cheers! To you I’ll lift my wine!

You’re special, Class of ’59!

Alive at 55!

Who’d have thought, in ’59, we’d now be thinking, “Almost time

To meet with friends from long ago?”  Back then, we didn’t know

What lay ahead for all of us.    We charged ahead, without fuss.

What varied lives we have led!  Joyous times; times of dread.

Some have moved; some stayed home.  Some came back, no more to roam.

We had careers, working hard.  Repaired our houses, mowed the yard.

Raised the kids, did our best.  Looked forward to a well-earned rest.

Sometimes I think I’m split in half.

Mostly savvy, avoid a gaffe.

Wrote a book; lots of praise.

Then there are the other days…

I belong to the CRS Club.

Membership is growing.

Get halfway across the house,
Then wonder where I’m going.

How many times I have said, “Can’t think of her name.”

I know it begins with a ‘B’.  Memory’s just not the same!

Some days I “click” ---it’s such a joy.

Other days I think, “Oh, boy,

I’m losing it!  I am wary.

It actually is a little scary.

Can’t find my glasses; search the house.

Not in the car; go to ask my spouse.

On the way, I look under the bed.

Stop at the mirror ---they’re on top of my head!

I know what I’m supposed to do.

Sleep well, eat what’s good for you.

Get off my duff!  Exercise!

(Rapid blinking of the eyes

Doesn’t count.  Gotta move.

Get the body in the groove.)

Experts say, “Socialize!

Laugh! Tease! Interaction’s wise.

We’ve got it made; our reunion group

Keeps us all in the loop.

It’s hard to believe this is year 55.

We’re still kickin’, very much alive!
