To whom it may concern, I understand you are preparing for your next class reunion. I had the opportunity to help Myron Mondora with some gifts, ideas and marketing material for one of your past reunions (I'm his daughter in law). Therefore, I wanted to forward a review of the Kalahari resort for you to consider when choosing a location. My family and I just got to attend and not only is the facility of Disney quality right in our own backyard, but also could serve as an amazing place to gather friends & family for the event. The facility could house everything from formal events and meeting classmates kids and grandkids. Also, I would be more than willing to help offer any services I can in preparation for the event. Thank you. Kelly Mondora

Just found this site after receiving a notice for the '61 50th reunion. Have not seen or talked to any classmates since the 25th reunion. Interesting that I have come across 3 other BHS graduates in our "developement" in NC. None of them close to our age. Most of them closer to my kids ages. Enjoy the reunion.

Both my wife and I (Elaine Zarlengo) are from the class of 1958 and live 25 miles West of Philadelphia in the Valley Forge area. We attended our very successful 50th class reunion two years ago and helped in locating and contacting other 1958 class members about the reunion which was a great success. Elaine and I would welcome hearing from anyone out there who might remember us.

Well totally off subjects of reunions, but have you noticed how over the years, the origonal BHS has beem altered to make space CHEAPLY! Shutting entrance to the origonal structure, where we all had grade school pictures taken, thenTHEY did the same to what was the built high school,mo more front Face , just ugly cover ups of someone archetectual art, quite disfiguring, disrespectful,no longer a potential for historical preservation. Is it just me? Or do we nred a campaign to BringBackBHS which is now like with a carport shed in the back yard, and PLEASA enter thru the back or the garage! We should be made as hell and not gonna take it any more!Yell it out your windows, but dont shoot urself o TV,

All, After nearly 50 years I feel a bit of information would be acceptable. Amazing to be recollected by anyone;let alone after 50 year. Rebecca and I have a son--Owen (married to Amy). Two grandsons--Andrew, 3 1/2 and Evan, 2. Went to undergraduate school at Muskingum College. Taught high school in Rochester NY and enjoyed it. Am convinced no one should teach at a university before working/ teaching else where. Attended Ohio University for graduate studies. Taught theatre and then Art History. Retired from teaching Asian Art History and chairing the art department at No. Ky. University. Surely, everyone knows where that is.:) Currently Rebecca and I "sit" the boys 2 1/2 days a week. Enjoy it very much, do lots with the boys, and for the first time in my life feel my age at the end of those days. Other pursuits are those of a lifelong reader in a variety of topics and authors. Do a lot with Photoshop, designing cards. Dave Philips was the one who called me. I was surprised at the amount and intensity of memories that came back after speaking with him and looking at the sites for BHS. sincerely, don kelm "There is more to life than simply increasing its speed." Greetings Classmates of '59. I am so glad to be reconnected after so many years. My address has been listed improperly over the past 9! Reading the Memoriams brought tears. Those of our classmates who have gone before us were friends, good people. The parts they played in our lives bring warm memories. Best regards to the committee planning our 50th reunion. I'm very sorry to inform everyone of the passing of Classmate Jerry Walker. He graduated in 1959 and I know we'll all remember him as our own Cecil B. DeMille. He produced and directed a Roman extravaganza with a cast of thousands? I think Chuck Henderson played Nero and I know Seth Price and I played Centurion guards complete with Keds sneakers. He lived and worked in California and over the past several months the combination of anemia, diabetes and heart problems finally took their toll and he succumbed on January 15th after suffering a massive heart attack. Jerry was a wine connoisseur and wrote for various magazines in his spare time. His "wine" friends will be having a dinner in his memory on February 25th. He is survived by his brother, Bruce. I will miss his good taste, humor and love of animals. Jack

It is, indeed, feeling like at least 45 years since our graduation...and even longer since Mrs. Miller's first grade class in the old building on Market Street. Since the 2001 reunion we have celebrated the addition to our family of a son-in-law and a granddaughter. Both events have brought us much joy and many trips to the San Francisco Bay area. I have retired from social work (hospice and medical)-a career resumed only briefly as our children were completing college. Yoga has replaced jogging, and e-mail is now an alternative to phone calls. Earl and I remain in Hyde Park on the campus of the University of Chicago. We still spend summers near Pentwater, Michigan in a family cottage now in its centenary year. Thanks so much for this elegant web site and especially for those photos from 1961 and 2001. With my very best wishes, "Chris Wills"

Like Bonnie I will not be able to make the 45th Reunion. I have not been back to Boardman since my Father passed away in 1991. My Mom is here in California now so we do not get back to Ohio like we use to. Mark is still in the Navy and I am still doing my financial consulting. Four children and three grandchildren keep me busy as ever. Love those grandbabies!! Have a great time. My best to one and all.

Sorry that John and I won't be able to be with you all for our 45th in August. It would be great to see everyone again as I haven't been back to Ohio since my paternal grandmother died in the late 70's. We spend every August at our summer home in Cape Breton, NS, so a return trip to the states at that time is not possible. I retired in June 2005 after working in administration and teaching Spanish for the past 35 years at Kent School in Kent, CT. My husband (of over 40 years!) is still working, so we have no immediate plans to leave the area. I am enjoying retirement, pursuing at my leisure gardening, antiqueing, travelling, and volunteering. Greetings to all and have a grand 45th - can't believe it's really been that long!

I am tenatively planning to attend the reunion next August. I had a bit of a shock about a year ago. I was on the treadmill at the fitness center when a familiar face popped up on the television screen -- Judy Garland '59, an ole' "band buddy"!! She was on one of those court shows with her little dog, yep, Toto!! I was so rattled at seeing her that I can't remember why she was there! Hope to see you all in 2006

Dear BHS 1958, 1959, 1960 & 1961 graduates and friends and adjoining classes as well, Talk has been floating around about a multi class reunion in 2009 or 2010. Who cares about how many years it's been since we've graduated? The important thing is to get as many of us together while we still can. The following is being suggested. Those willing to be a part of the planning process could meet for an extended summer weekend in 2006 at Geneva-on-the-Lake or Conneaut to scope out their facilities. Then in 2007 we could meet in Sandusky for another extended weekend to visit the islands, Sawmill Creek Lodge, Cedar Point and the 4 indoor year round water parks. Finally in 2008 we could meet with our classmates in Florida to check out what they have to offer. At that meeting we could decide where and when we should schedule the grand reunion. What do you think about this pre-plan? If you have any other ideas/suggestions/comments, we hope to see them posted on this web site.

Hello fellow classmates: Last week (September 21st) Cliff Green,Lloyd Murray,Don Bartlett and I played hooky from work and played a round of golf at Thunderbird South Golf Course up here in Huron. We all agreed it might be something we should do at least on an annual basis(see how I kept it open for the possibility of getting together more than once a year?) This affair is obviously open to any 1956 through 1962 male or female golfing class member within a 160 radius of Boardman( we can work on this restriction too.) What do you all think? Also,I bumped into Diane Elder Morris and her husband Bob at an Art Fair in Madison,Indiana over the weekend. They live in Louisville---small world !!!! Kentucky Derby anyone ? THIS IS THE CD THAT WAS PLAYED AT THE REUNION AND INCLUDES "YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE" PLUS 18 OTHER SONGS RECORED BY THE 1960 A CAPPELLA CHOIR. THE CD LISTS ALL OF THE SONGS AND REPLICATES THE RECORD COVER WHICH PICTURED ALL MEMBERS OF THE CHOIR AND LISTED ALL 114 NAMES BY CLASS. To all you Spartan Alumni-- A belated, grateful thank you to Don Samuels and a bunch of other folks [if I start trying to name them all, I'll leave someone out] for a wonderful Re-union last month. The only thing that could have made it better would have been if more of you were there. But, there is talk of a 50th for the class of 59, maybe somewhere other than Youngstown. Wouldn't that be special! Stay tuned... A quick update of my last 45 years--some of you may remember I had the Mr. Steak restaurant on Market Street next to the Middle School. Sold out to my brother in 1973--moved to Grand Rapids MI. Got back into the advertising business--ultimately opened my own agency in 1980. 1996 dissolved Toth Marketing and Advertising and became Sales Mgr of a Classical radio station-- 98.7 WFGR in GR. In 1982 came to visit AZ--fell in love with the desert, and always knew I'd move here--hopefully before all the hair and teeth were gone. 2001 we pulled the trigger and moved to Tucson. Haven't looked back since, and haven't shoveled snow in three years. Am still in the broadcast business as Sales Mgr. of an Oldies station KTUC. And yes Hap--"Earth Angel" is in our playlist. I have two wonderful friends I call my children, Cheryl who lives here in AZ with her husband--about an hour south of Tucson, and Marc, who lives in Ann Arbor MI with wife and two children. Was divorced, and have been remarried for 15 years. Barb has three children--all live in MI--Paula and Cayd live in the Grand Rapids area, and Kathy lives North of Petoskey way up near the Mackinac Bridge. Three grandchildren on her side. Total of 5. Our home in Arizona is always open to visitors from faraway lands--rates are pretty good too--we'd love to see you. Give us a call--520-877-9940 From the Toths of Tucson Steve and Barb

Sorry I missed the reunion in August. It has been a very long time since I have seen any of my 1961 classmates other than Paula Benjamin Barrett. I have been married to my husband Frank for 40 years this past August. We met at Bowling Green State University. I taught for 27 years in Vermilion, retiring 5 years ago. We have 3 married children: Bill-N.D. graduate with 2 children, living in Chicago; Jennifer-B.G.S.U graduate with 2 children living in Cumming, GA; Tom-Univ. of Dayton grad with 1 daughter living in St. Louis. This granddaughter is the reason I missed this year's reunion. I was doing a fund raiser for her on the evening of the reunion. She has cerebral palsy and is going to the Eureca Institute in Anaheim, CA for a month long intensive therapy that will hopefully help her walk. Sorry I missed you all. Hope to attend the next reunion.

If you see the Memorial page and realize a name is missing, please let me know via email above. I will do my best to respect their memories by keeping this area current. If you have a suggestion, email me as well. Also, I am updating the Class of "61 address list for our 45th reunion in two years. I am using the Boardman Alumni Association database, which is great. Someone tracked me down, though I see that I am still listed among the missing in action. Because of a wedding, I will not be able to make it back to Boardman for the reunion, but I'm sure a great time will be had by all. For the record, after obtaining degrees in physics at Carnegie-Mellon and two years as a postdoc at Princeton, I have for the past thirty-three years been Professor of Physics at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst except for sabbaticals and a two year stint as Program Officer at the National Science Foundation in Washington, DC. I have two children: Jeremy is a computer jock in the Boston area and Jesse is a professional violinist in Providence. Judy and I plan on attending the 2004 reunion. All of you have done a great job organizing it. Thanks from us out of towner's. Just got a call from Dave Garwood. It's been 15+ years since I've seen him. Great to hear from him. I retired in 95, consulted for a few years, work part time for West Marine and race sail boats as a past time. Been doing that for 29 years. Guess I'm hooked. Look forward to seeing you all! Chuck

It has been a very sad year for my family having lost my partner of 39 years on June 7 2003. John was an Oral Surgeon and semi retired working only two days a week. Our winters have been spent in Fl. for the last four years. I plan to make this my permanent residence now. I hope to see many of our friends in August. And Ron thanks for remembering your time with us in Colorado. I have received many kind notes of condolence and thank you for your kindness.

Just got my letter about the reunion. Don't know if I can attend. Would like to see my classmates that I haven't seen for 40+ years (and to see if you look as old as I do). After graduating from OSU and 2 yrs in the army, I spent 31 yrs as a dentist at the Dept of Veteran Affairs hospital in St. Petersburg, FL. I retired 11/02/01 and my wife and I moved to Lynchburg, VA to be with our daughter, son-in-law and new grandson. We were babysitters while they finished college. Love being a grandpa. Will probably end up back in FL. I thought VA was in the south, but it gets cold here. I know, I know....wimp. Really sorry to hear about John Nespeca. Just before I went into army, I was going thru Colorado Springs, CO. Can't remember how I knew they were there, but John was a Capt (DDS) at Ft. Carson and I was soon to be a Capt (DDS) at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. When I called, Ginny invited me to spend a couple of nights with them. I always remembered that kindness. Over the years, at times, I've wondered what happened to them. I don't know if it was the dentist connection with John, or remembering Ginny's pretty face and smile. In any event, in 1968, they treated me better than they needed.

to dave, don, jack, et al. The 61 class is the bottom rung of the five class reunion. We of course have many associations with classes of 62 and 63. So, please make plans to attract these classes, especially since our numbers are diminishing and attendance could benifit from more widespread participation, as your main message indicates. Contact their leaders and spread the word. I will gladly help since in a way BHS has always been one big class, First Class of Course. Ginny, Sorry about John, a Hermit Brother. Donnie D.

Hello Boardman alums,

I know you are eagerly awaiting news about our organizational meeting held last week in Boardman. As unofficial scribe for the group consisting of Dave Beede, Don Samuels and myself, I will try to bring you up to date. First, I must pop in my best digitally produced and enhanced "Doo Wop" CD to get in the mood. With "Earth Angel" playing in the background---the Penguins version NOT the Crewcut abomination---here it goes.

It was decided to hold a multi year reunion consisting of the classes of 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960 and 1961 on August 13th, 14th and 15th 2004--that is two thousand and FOUR-- in Boardman. The committee kicked around some ideas about the events of that weekend (golf, tours, picnics, hiking in Mill Creek Park, etc.) but will hold off until we get more feedback from you or the larger committee.

With this in mind, please let us hear from you. You can reply to Don, Dave or myself (which some of you have) or log on to our web site at www.bhs59.com and post your comments in the "class notes" section.

We invite you to attend our next meeting on July 19th, 10:30 am at Don Samuels' office. We hope representatives from all five classes will be there to begin the process of planning the best reunion ever.

Finally, we ask you to start spreading the word to all classmates you still communicate with regarding our August 13, 14, 15 2004 reunion date. The Internet is a perfect tool to start a ground swell of excitement and anticipation.

With that said and "The Duke of Earl" just starting, I will sign off and on behalf of the committee, please stay in touch.

It saddens me to write that we have lost another 1959 classmate. Jim Plummer passed away last weekend. Our hearts go out to his wife Carol and the rest of his family. Many of us had the pleasure of spending an enjoyable time with Jim and Carol at the 2000 reunion. We will all miss Jim very much.

I just ran across the Boardman High site today (9/25/02). I wouldn't even try to describe the feeling of seeing names and faces after more than 40 years, but I bet others have the same reaction. My complements to all involved in puting the site together. Ed Schorr - 1960

Here is a message I sent to Jack Haplea, Dave Beede and Don Samuels. I have been encouraged to share it on this site. Jack, Dave and Don, Yesterday, while looking for something else, I stumbled into the Boardman High School web site, and ultimately into the Class of 1959 story and pictures. For about ten minutes, I had a very strange, sort of wrenching sensation, and it took a few more minutes for me to understand it. I instinctively, or maybe subconsciously, figured I was looking into my own history, but I wasn't there. I had been written out of my own history. The problem was, of course, that the key to being a part of that history was graduating, becoming a member of the Class of 1959, and I didn't have that. My family left Boardman in December 1957, midway through our Junior year, for a small town about 40 miles from Atlanta. Books could be written about the context (and they have been), but the picture should take some shape if you note that Eisenhower had just sent in federal troops to reopen Central High School in Little Rock and the Atlanta airport was a Quonset hut. The culture shock wasn't all strange or negative, and I managed to fit in, as teenagers frequently desperately want to do. For the past more or less 33 years, I have been practicing law in Chicago, for the past 12 in very rewarding work with a community development bank on the South Side. I am the husband of one (a wonderful lady from Charlotte whom I met when I was in law school at Duke), the father of three (there is life after tuition) and, as of this May, the grandfather of one. This last role is one I think I might have been designed for, as soon as I can come to terms with sleeping with a grandmother. I think about retiring, but I don't have a plan. Our generation seems to opt out early, unlike our parents. My dad worked full-time until he was 75. I think one difference is that we went through the transition from gentlemanly profession to competitive pressure cooker, and getting out looks good. We also have had the benefit of the 90s on our retirement plans and our real estate, although I recently noted that my 401k has become more like a 201k. My parents went back to Youngstown in 1967, and in the early 70s my dad ran into Jeff Heal. That led to a telephone call and some updating. I think that's where I learned that Bruce Law had died in a motorcycle accident. I remember Bruce as a good friend and a real character. Also about that time, I saw David Dehetre and his spouse, Donna Bayless, in Chicago. But I think that's it. Is there a class directory that you can share? My curiosity about where people I went to school with for over ten years have wound up was certainly aroused by my discovery yesterday. You three look well and, especially Jack, are very recognizable after 45 years. Warm regards to you all, Chris. I have been trying to locate a long lost friend by the name of Beth Waidner. She moved away from Columbus, Ohio back in the 70's, to Youngstown or Boardman. She and I lived on the same street (Cherrywood Court) and played together as youngsters. Her parents names are John and Patty. She has a brother named Whit and a sister named Stephanie. I am pretty sure she graduated in 1981. I searched through your Alumni records but did not see her name. I'm not even sure she was still at Boardman when she graduated. I know this is an unusual request, but I can't think of any other way to find her. If security reasons are a factor, I completely understand. However, if you could get in touch with her and atleast tell her I am looking for her, that would be so appreciated. Please email me back one way or another. It's been twenty seven years since I have seen her. My maiden name was Rita Cianciolo. I sure hope I hear from you. Thank you! Hello Boardman Alums,

We hope you are all healthy and happy.

The brain trust for the 45th reunion of the class of 1959 met on Saturday, July 6th. After a battery of jokes and entertainment from Kenny (aka Henny) Melek, President Don Samuels called the meeting to order. After an hour or two of discussion, interspersed with the mandatory meanderings of "remember whens," Cliff Green, Dave Beede, Don, Ken and myself came up with the following tentative plans.
1) Reunion to be held in Youngstown (Boardman) the first or second weekend in Aug., 2004
2) Friday morning/afternoon would be set aside for an organized golf outing. We felt it would be easier to schedule tee times for a group on Friday rather than Saturday or Sunday.
3) Friday night would be the informal get together at a location decided upon by the site committee--hopefully within walking distance from the place where most out of towners will be staying.
4) Saturday would be dedicated to a tour of the "old haunts" or at least the empty lots where they once existed.
5) Saturday night is when we could meet on a more formal basis, perhaps at Tippecanoe County Club, as we've done in the past.
6) Finally, we thought a Sunday morning brunch would be in order for farewells.

Please note that these are TENTATIVE plans. We have two years to modify and refine them so let Don, Ken, Cliff, Dave or me know how you feel. Also, we welcome all other classes in our range to be a part of our efforts to reunite. We therefore welcome the classes of 1957, 1958, 1960 and 1961 to join with us in 2004.

Pass on this information to any classmates you still correspond with and have them contact us so we can begin to develop an accurate data base. Dave Beede, our resident computer/web site guru is in the process of setting up our own web site and we will keep you posted on his progress.

That's it for now. Let us know how you feel about our plans for the committee wants this reunion to be a most memorable event for all.

Have a great summer---

I am sorry to report that Brian Rickard, class of '59, has recently passed away (Youngstown Vindicator, 10/27/00). Brian was a valued friend throughout high school to all of us. Thinking of him reminds me of many laughs we have shared. There are numerous stories that I would like to tell, but one stands out for me. It involves a week-long party at Brian's house while his parent were out of town. We did our best to clean up the debris but to no avail. I think he was grounded for about one year.
I had not seen Brian since high school. A sad occasion such as this reminds us how important is it to renew those old friendships.

Quick history of my past 40 years: been in top management for major advertising agencies in Detroit, New York, Cleveland and Belgium running the Buick, Goodyear, American Electric Power, Sohio accounts among others. Last five years have been V.P. of marketing for "Night Business Report," the #1 daily business news program on TV, carried by 274 stations. Also handle several other national TV programs. Married to Joyce for 28 years with one son. Think of all of you often. Have a great time at the reunion. Special hello to Al and John. Jim Fasilis jim_fasilis@nbr.com Ft. Lauderdale, FL

OK Everyone...time to put away the crutches, canes and walkers and get out the rugs, wigs and Tylenol so we can take this giant step back in time. I have come to realize that God has such a great "sense of humor" when it comes to our "short term memories"! Not to worry though...all we need to do is run the alphabet when it comes time to put names to the faces we are about to encounter. My long term memory still serves me well and I have had some really funny recalls. Anyone remember when Ray Loesch locked the cleaning lady in the bookstore, the girls from Chi that went to the Cavalier meeting only to end up locked in the bathroom until Jack Harley's mom came home to save them. Master keys for Muzzy and Ace's desks, the clock being shot out at West. Blvd. school. Then there was Swenson's, Idora Park, the Elms and Southside Drive-In. Friday nights at the Old Barn and weekends at Arrowhead. What more could kids ask for and how sad that our own kids never had these opportunities. Counting on my "post-it's" to remind me that next week Bob and I will celebrete our 40th anniversary. We are looking forward to seeing everyone and just remember...if we just smile it's because we haven't put the name to the face, but it will happen. A sense of humor is the only way to deal with these "Golden Years".

We have a son Brad (30) and daughter Elisa (26) and one grandson, Destin (16 months). Just love being a grandparent. I am in my 31st year with the Construction Information Systems division of McGraw-Hill Inc. We have relocated from Louville, KY to Minneapolis, MS to Boston, MA and have been in New Orleans for the past 20 years. Joan teaches voice & piano in the public school system. We were able to attend the reunion pictured above, but prior commitments keep us from being able to return to Youngstown in August. Appreciate the hard work of the committee and if you have cause to be in New Orleans, my email address is Dodgeguy9@aol.com.

Hi to all! Still undecided about reunion, family wedding (not immediate) in August in Colorado, so this is a tough choice to make. Have lived in Northern Virginia 38 years now, still married to the same man! Son and daughter moved out, I retired a year ago, my mom came to live with us about two months later. Sometimes we think we have a revolving door here, so if anyone is in the area, feel free to contact me. We will be here another year and a half and then retiring to the 18th fairway in a golf community near Wilmington NC. We can't wait for that day. Good luck with the reunion, hello to all!

Class of 1960 - This is great! Brings tears to my eyes! I have worked as an RN for 35 years, mostly in Ohio and then Vermont. I am newly arrived here in the SW after about 4 years of working as a nurse in Mexico - in Cuernavaca for those who know MX. Also worked in a very remote village in the mts. with extremely poor folks, climbing around with a backpack on these bad knees!! It has been quite an experience. I settled in the SW to be closer to Mexico and friends there, and the great culture! I am divorced now 10 yrs - my daughter Becky is attending veterinary medical school at Colorado State. My son Dan lives and works in Vermont - and has 2 very active girls. My passion is social justice, political issues, immigration issues, especially as they impact the poor. I too have found myself (not by accident) on protest lines (SOA) with lots and lots of other "grayheads" from our era who have "been there". Wish I could come in August but am just starting a new position of ALL weekends - so I'm not old enough to have vacation.....I hope to hear from anyone out there who might want to say "Hi!" Have a great time in August!!

Nice to see some familiar names from the class of '61 and to read even bits of the lives lived since those strange high-school years. Kathy Kling and my sister Donna were the only close friends I had at good old Boardman High - but I still get a kick out of seeing names of other classmates and remembering little things! After BHS I went to college, got married (35 years so far), joined the Peace Corps (Turkey),was a social worker, chaplain, and now an executive director of a regional Second Harvest food bank. I had 3 kids and a foster child during that time, even houseparented during a crazy period (18 kids once). My children moved out and my mom moved in - a common experience I'm sure. I've protested nuclear weapons (in my 40's believe it or not), jumped out of an airplane at 50 and am now a happy Auduboner. Life continues to be puzzling and usually good. Nice to have the web site available for re-introductions. Hope the reunion is a success.

Have worked for Hallmark cards in Sales/Marketing position for 32 years, began in 1968 after serving 3 years in US Army. Usually get back to Youngstown around Labor Day to visit sister, Joanne Beranek, class of 1955, living in Canfield. I hope you all enjoy the affair.

Our only son Kevin is a stock broker (now getting into e-commerce) and his wife of two years is also a school teacher. As a hobby, I race a sports car in SCCA competition. I'm working on the second book for my French publisher, a sort of "art de vivre" coffee-table book of famous Americans living in Paris. After being here for 24 years (18 years for me), we've decided to finally move back to the USA...in another three years! Of course, we'll keep our apartment in the middle of Paris. We've seen several BHSers vacationing here this year. Give us a call if you're planning a trip to the city of lights.
